Wellness is a business strategy

Instituting a wellness program in the workplace has become a business strategy for many organizations. With the skyrocketing cost of healthcare and the increasing number of claims due to preventable chronic diseases, companies are running out of options to protect their own financial health. Cigna estimates that 70% of healthcare costs are related to preventable chronic diseases, all of which are lifestyle related. To change this trend, behavior modification is required as it relates to lifestyle choices. Since wellness addresses the whole person, including health, nutrition, exercise, stress levels, mental health and “spirit”, it can impact a company's entire organization. For a wellness program to have a meaningful impact, the leadership of an organization must first lay the foundation within the company culture for the program to take root and bear fruit.  This foundation is tied directly to the company's business strategy.

Wellness is an innovative work practice

Our innovative wellness development program combines the principles of traditional leadership development with the emerging trend of wellness in the workplace.  Wellness development assists in the promotion of a company's overall health, including financial, organizational, and individual. Studies have shown that wellness initiatives often fail because of the lack of executive support; there is no sustainability of the program.

Wellness development:  Walk Before You Run

Determining the cultural and leadership goals within an organization prior to rolling out a wellness program can help create alignment and focus. When wellness goals are integrated with the company's strategic business goals, the importance of the program is magnified. As wellness is ingrained into the company's culture and continually supported, healthier lifestyles (behavior modification) may be realized in employees which in turn can positively impact the company as a whole.

Wellness development:  Progression

Once the foundation is in place, wellness has a natural progression within the workplace.  It starts with individual wellness; taking charge and addressing those things that individuals have personal control over. Individuals are accountable to themselves at this point for beginning to make lifestyle changes to benefit their health. The next area affected is the intrapersonal health of the organization. This addresses how groups, teams, and departments interact with each other in their communications, conflict resolution, collaboration, leadership development, etc. With a wellness program in place, it is anticipated that productivity levels continue to improve and the inner workings of an organization improve, as well. An active, influential wellness committee will assist in the support and ongoing visibility of the program. In this phase, people begin to become accountable to each other for their mutual success.

Wellness development:  Leadership

Because it is the people who make up the organization, leadership becomes accountable to all employees to nourish and maintain the health of the organization. As the company progresses through its corporate wellness and leadership initiatives, anticipated results include: reduction in preventable chronic disease health costs, improved communications, increased productivity, and other employee related benefits.

 Wellness development:  Employer of choice

Additionally, leadership can use these positive changes to create an employer of choice environment to promote their recruiting and retention efforts. Offering corporate wellness is quickly becoming one of the top sought after benefits by potential employees in the wide range of generations in the market. By building and sustaining a culture of wellness, organizations are posturing themselves to attract top talent in a global pool of candidates. Many companies understand and appreciate how traditional leadership development positively impacts their organization. Innovative companies blend the corporate wellness component with leadership development to energize the behavioral changes necessary in their employees and within the organization to maximize their human and financial resources.
